Our Mission

Born from the YouTube demonetization crisis, Wotch emerged in 2018 as the first creator-led video sharing platform, built to put creators back in the driver’s seat. More than just a place to upload videos, Wotch was a movement - a platform crafted around creator's vision, voices, and value.

We believe in the power of creators to shape culture, so we built a platform where their ideas could flourish on their own terms. Unlike traditional platforms, Wotch prioritized creative freedom, fair monetization, and meaningful community engagement. With a seamless user experience and a commitment to fair content policies, Wotch empowered creators to build real connections with their audiences while receiving the respect and revenue they deserved.

How the journey unfolded

Inception

Wotch was born in 2018, shortly after 20 year old founders Scott Willson and James Sadler had sold their previous startup (an e-learning company used by clients such as St John Ambulance & Gibraltar Government), and were on the hunt for a new challenge. Spotting a growing crisis in the creator space—where creators were losing revenue and control over their content—they saw an opportunity to change the game. A day before the biggest creator event of the year in Los Angeles, Vidcon, they made a last-minute decision, booking flights from London with a mission to learn and connect. Their bold move paid off. At the event, they befriended many of the world’s top creators, including Jake Paul, who shared their vision for a creator-led platform and invited them to his LA mansion the following day to discuss further. Inspired and energized, Scott and James returned to the UK, to start planning the launch of the platform.

Evolution

By 2020, Wotch had grown into a thriving community with hundreds of thousands of users engaging with the platform. The team were proud to see creators such as Tanya Burr, Ryan Taylor & Connor Ball all using Wotch, in addition to grass-roots creators making their creative debut. This surge in popularity brought both excitement and prompted evolution. The team were proud to see the community flourishing, but knew that key decisions needed to be made particularly surrounding content curation and moderation. During this phase, the team launched a new moderation feature called WotchDog, that rewarded platform users for reviewing and voting upon content quality and safety. The feature was popular, and was the first of it's kind in the industry, leading to future social platforms embracing a similar approach. They also decided to transition to a more curated ‘Netflix-style’ model, which included the addition of a range of industry-first superfan features that empowered creators to monetise their following more effectively.

South America Launch

In 2021, Wotch began to attract significant engagement from South American influencers such as Kondzilla, Vanessa Lopes, Lucas Rangel & Fefe, which sparked conversations about the immense potential of the emerging market. Platforms such as YouTube had yet to establish deep roots in the region, making Wotch well-positioned to become the home for creators in South America. Eager to understand the needs of this growing community, the founders traveled to Brazil, one of their most popular hubs, to meet their creators and immerse themselves in the local creator culture. Inspired by the Brazilian creator community, they decided to tailor new platform features to the needs of the growing market - such as adding support for the popular payment method PIX. The year culminated in the Wotch team hosting an unforgettable Halloween event in São Paulo at the iconic Theatro Municipal with Wotch creators boasting a combined following of over 130 million in attendance.
